A delegation led by director of the Republican Ecological Education and Training Center and acting director of the Republican Center of Young Tourists and Local Lore of the Ministry of Education Firuza Sultanzade paid a working visit to the Republic of Belarus on the invitation of the Republican Education and Local Lore Center of the country`s Ministry of Education. uring the visit the delegation attended an international scientific conference titled “Environmental education for sustainable development: national and international practice” in the city of Minsk. Firuza Salmanzade made a presentation on “Azerbaijan`s experience in the field of environmental education for children and youth” at the conference. The second day of the visit saw the delegation attend a country-wide forum on environmental education. During the visit Firuza Sultanzade met with Belarusian Sport and Tourism Minister Alexander Shamko, deputy Minister of Education Viktor Yakzhyk, and  head of social, educational and ideological work at the Ministry of Education Maria Sorotnik to discuss cooperation in the field of environmental and tourism education for children and youth. The delegation also had a meeting with teachers and pupils of Minsk ecological gymnasium, and they had a broad exchange of views on environmental awareness. The delegation visited the Museum of Old Folk Crafts and Technologies Dudutki and Agro-tourism complex Nanosi, where they were informed of national ethnographic values. The Azerbaijani delegation then visited Mir and Nesvizh castles. They also joined a workshop involving museum directors, which featured interesting discussions on museum education. The Azerbaijani delegation also visited Zubryonok National Children`s Education and Health Complex.

Specialized Olympic Reserve Children`s and Youth Football School of Tahsil Republican Sport Center has won U-16 Azerbaijan NICEF Women's League. U-16 UNICEF Women's League 2015/2016 season saw 10 teams from two regions compete for the title of the champions in 6 rounds. Specialized Olympic Reserve Children`s and Youth Football School of Tahsil Republican Sport Center defeated Zagatala team 4-0 in the semi-final round to qualify for the final. In the last game of the tournament, the football school of Tahsil Republican Sport Center took on the team of Gakh Children`s and Youth Sport Center at Bina stadium. The teams were locked in a goalless draw at full-time. Two extra-time goals earned the football school of Tahsil Republican Sport Center the title of Azerbaijani champions. Narmin Hasanova, who scored 26 goals for Specialized Olympic Reserve Children`s and Youth Football School of Tahsil Republican Sport Center, became the top scorer of U-16 UNICEF Women's League 2015/2016 season.

Employees of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited the Heydar Aliyev Center as part of a series of events marking the 93rd birth anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev. Participants in the event included member of the Board of Directors of New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) Narimanov district organization, deputy Minister of Education Firudin Gurbanov, chairman of YAP Narimanov district organization Tamraz Taghiyev, chairman of YAP Ministry of Education first party organization, head of the ministry`s Department of Finance Rauf Orujov and employees of the ministry. The delegation viewed Heydar Aliyev Museum, where they were informed of different periods of the national leader`s life and activity, and familiarized themselves with interesting facts, photo and video material, and other unique exhibits. Speaking at the event, deputy Minister of Education Firudin Gurbanov highlighted national leader Heydar Aliyev`s role in strengthening state building, ensuring political stability in Azerbaijan, improving the country`s international image, developing education, healthcare and culture, building Azerbaijanism ideology and realizing national statehood ideas. He said that founded by national leader Heydar Aliyev, political and economic strategy successfully continued under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. “Accomplishments made in recent years in education sector as well as the planned measures pave the way for continuous development of Azerbaijani education,” Firudin Gurbanov said. Thirteen employees of the Ministry of Education, who applied for YAP membership, were admitted to the party during the event.

A workshop has been held at the Ecological Education and Training Center of the Ministry of Education and Republican Center of Young Tourists and Local Lore, involving expert of Senior Expert Service (SES) of the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce Joachim Fantkuller. The workshop aimed to prepare study programs on “Family tourism”, “Green tourism,” and “Agrarian tourism” for children and teenagers, improve work of the teaching staff, and train new specialists. The German expert visited “Ecoclubs” and ecological and tourism centers in Baku, and also enquired about the organization of enlightenment programs for children’s groups at Qala State History and Ethnography Museum and Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape. As part of his visit, Mr Fantkuller had a meeting with head of the Out-of-school activity organization department of the Ministry of Education Vasif Mammadov, and they discussed cooperation prospects. SES program expert also attended the first Ecological Forum of Ecoclubs, and joined debates on presentations of young ecologists. He also met with students at Azerbaijan Tourism and Management University. Accompanied by employees of the Republican Tourism and Local Lore Center, the German expert also attended a workshop aimed at improving professional skills of the teaching staff and young specialists of Sumgayit City Ecological Education and Training Center, Center of Young Tourists and Local Lore.

A pupil of the Specialized Olympic Reserve Children`s and Youth Sport School No. 12 has won a world karate championship among children born between 2002-2009. Huseyn Mammadli, 13, defeated all of his 15 opponents to win the first Children`s World Karate Championship in the Turkish city of Istanbul. The championship saw the participation of fighters from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Ukraine, Iraq and Algeria.

IDEA Public Union will conduct another “Green Mountain” campaign in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations (“ASAN service”) on May 14. The campaign will be conducted under “Let’s exchange paper for a leaf” paper waste collection project. The campaign aims to increase environmental awareness, reduce paper wastage save trees through encouraging recycling, ensure protection of nature and maintain ecological balance.  Held annually, “Green Mountain” social awareness campaign has taken place in the cities of Sumgayit, Sabirabad and Barda so far, sparking intense public interest. This time the campaign will bring together representatives of government bodies, non-governmental organizations and private sector as well as citizens in capital Baku with the aim of protecting the environment. The campaign will be held at “ASAN service” center No.5 (Heydar Aliyev Avenue 115, Nizami district). Those who want to contribute to ensuring environmental protection and maintaining ecological balance can join the campaign through bringing waste paper.

An art competition involving higher school students and marking the 93rd anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev has wrapped up. A concert on this occasion was held at Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theatre. Participants in the event included Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov, chairman of Azerbaijan Education Workers Free Trade Unions Republican Committee Sattar Mehbalıyev, heads of higher education institutions and students. The annual competition aims to encourage patriotism and respect for national culture, arts and traditions among students, and discover and develop young talents. The concert featured performance by amateur bands and musicians, singers, dancers, elocutionists from creative studios. The two-stage competition involved more than 1000 students from 24 higher schools. Winners were selected by a jury panel consisting of people`s artists, honored culture and arts figures. Chaired by head of Azerbaijan Composers Union Firangiz Alizade, the jury included Tarana Muradova, Baba Veziroghlu, Naila Mirmammadli, Hafiz Quliyev and Samir Jafarov.

On May 7, Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov met with employees of educational institutions who succeeded at Baku Marathon 2016. Minister Mikayil Jabbarov said that initiated by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Baku Marathon 2016 aimed to contribute to the development of sport in Azerbaijan, promote healthy lifestyle among people, especially youth, and encourage them to do good deeds. The Minister said Baku Marathon 2016 was praiseworthy as it united representatives of different nations around a single goal in accordance with Azerbaijan`s peace-loving and tolerant mission. Mikayil Jabbarov expressed his confidence that the marathon would become a nice tradition, and enjoy greater interest in the future. Employees of educational institutions and athletes, including Namiq Asadov, Tural Sadiqli, Elman Abishov, Raida Aslanova, Raqsana Rajabli, Lala Pirumova succeeded at Baku Marathon 2016. The Minister presented the marathon participants with certificates of merit and gifts.

They discussed relations between the Ministry of Education and the United Nations and its agencies. They also exchanged views over prospects for cooperation between the Ministry of Education and UN in accordance with the goals set by “State Strategy for Development of Education in the Republic of Azerbaijan”, particularly in the field of vocational education.

On May 3-4, an Azerbaijani delegation attended the 89th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) in Geneva. The delegation, whose composition was defined by an order of President Ilham Aliyev, was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov. The session considered the seventh, eighth and ninth periodical reports of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The reports were presented by Khalaf Khalafov. In his remarks, the Deputy FM said the elimination of racial discrimination was stipulated in Azerbaijan`s national legislation. He highlighted the implementation of the National Plan of Action on the Protection of Human Rights and the Plan of Action on the Fight against Trafficking in Human Beings. Khalaf Khalafov drew the audience`s attention to Azerbaijan`s measures – both at national and international levels – to develop religious tolerance and inter-ethnic relations in the country. The Deputy FM said that in accordance with an executive order of the Azerbaijani President, 2016 was declared a year of Multiculturalism with the aim of preserving the values of multiculturalism in the country. During the session CERD members hailed Azerbaijan`s cooperation with the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, accomplishments in the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and the country`s legislation in this regard. They also applauded the national solidarity in Azerbaijan, the government`s measures to strengthen the protection of women`s rights, pardons, as well as the country`s contribution to the fight against racism, development of multiculturalism and cultural diversity through hosting large-scale international sporting and cultural events. The committee members also hailed information on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which was provided by the Azerbaijani delegation. Deputy Minister of Education Firudin Gurbanov responded to CERD members` questions on education, including education for refugees and IDPs, women`s involvement in the education system and other issues. Deputy Minister of Education Firudin Gurbanov also highlighted what had been done to prevent racial discrimination in Azerbaijan`s education system and the government`s attention to this sector. He said the right to get education and right to use one`s mother tongue were stipulated in the country`s legislation, Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and relevant articles of Education Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Deputy Minister said there were schools for national (ethnic) minorities in the country, and spoke of preparation of textbooks for them. Firudin Gurbanov described Azerbaijan as a land of tolerance and multiculturalism. He drew the audience`s attention to a series of events held under a plan of action for the Year of Multiculturalism, saying they included a drawing competition among pupils, seminars on inter-cultural communication skills and knowledge in secondary and vocational schools, “Azerbaijani multiculturalism” public lectures, regional quiz competitions among pupils.
